AHS - ISU Wind Turbine Project

You may have heard that Iowa is the “Saudi Arabia of wind.” Iowa currently ranks 2nd in the nation in total wind power production (behind Texas). Iowa will continue to play a big role in wind energy in the future.

AHS is collaborating with electrical engineers at ISU to research and hopefully put in wind turbines at 1 or more schools in the district. The idea is to involve students in every aspect of the planning and installation of the wind turbines. This has many benefits to the students and the district, including education, money savings, and reducing our use of fossil fuels.

The project will be an interdisciplinary one, including students who are interested in science, community outreach/journalism, and business/economics. We are looking for a group of students to be part of a Steering Committee which will oversee the process and keep everyone involved connected and informed. The Steering Committee will have separate teams such as:

I. Science/Engineering: (siting, selection, construction, wind and environmental studies, noise
studies types of turbines)
II. Financial (cost/benefit analysis, grants, loans, etc.)
III. Liaison to School Board, City, etc. (Public Speaking)
IV. Community Outreach/Information (Write articles for the paper, journalism,
manage a webpage or wiki site)

The Steering Committee will decide what the final structure will look like.

You don’t have to be an expert in any of these areas - you just need to have an interest in being part of this awesome project!

Please see me if you are interested.
